What if... A ride sharing app kind of like Uber, except 1) it’s slightly cheaper, and 2) the drivers are allowed to drive basically whatever the heck they want. When your driver shows up, they could be driving a Checker Marathon, a Ford Model T, a ‘69 Charger, a donk, a Lamborghini, a Goggomobil, or even a Yugo, and you won’ t know for sure what it is (besides a few cryptic details such as how many people it seats and how many cubic feet of cargo space) until it arrives! I call it “ Guber”, the ride-sharing app for the adventurous ! Now, I understand Uber drivers often complain that they aren’t paid enough or treated like employees. So one way I would help increase revenue to allow for this without raising prices is to instruct the drivers to casually slip various paid advertisements into the conversation with passengers. Something like this:

Driver: So how was your day?

Passenger: My hamster died.

Driver: Er ... Geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance.

Passenger: What t he frick does that have to do with anything?

Driver: I don’t know. Sorry ‘bout your hamster.

Or...

Passenger: ...So I have this lemon, right? And my friend’s hamster had just -

Driver: Did you know Manscaped’s Lawnmower 3.0 can keep your nethers as hairless as a baby’s bottom?

Passenger: Really? Can I try that?

Driver: Sure, here ya go.

[ Bzzzzzzt ]

Passenger: Wow, that’s amazing!

Driver: I know, right?

See? Perfectly casual. And if passengers don’t want their drivers to advertise things, they can always upgrade to Guber+ for an additional monthly fee. Guber+ also comes with things like an “I don’t want a Yugo” button, so there are other incentives to choose it as well.

Obviously, the cars will have to be inspected by a mechanic to make sure they’re mechanically sound and have decent-enough interiors. Nothing insanely strict , this isn’t the TUV, but I figure we should have some sort of standards. Other than that, the car just needs to seat more than one person and adhere to the safety standards of the time in which it was built.

Any suggestions?

I suggest a classic car only version of uber, called cluber . Car must be at least 20 years old and have 100,000 miles or higher to qualify.

OR even better, a 2 doors only option called contort+ , because the passenger MUST sit in the back seat no matter how they have to bend themselves to climb back there or fit .

I dunno about the 100,000 miles requirement, a lot of old cars used to get replaced after just 60-70k miles. Besides, low- mileage vehicles could get a chance to exercise more!

I haven’t put that much thought into it yet. Remind me in a few years when I don’t have college stuff to do. Or... You have my blessing to start this company yourself!

Jaluber . You might not be on time, but you will have a story to tell.

I think it would be more interesting if it was all imported JDM vans.

What if we did this for the super rich with all those fancy super cars and hyper cars and such so that way they actually get driven like they were intended to instead of sitting in a climate controlled garage?

This sounds like the spirit airlines of ridesharing services: a bit rough around the edges, and dirt cheap, but you’ll get from A to B... probably.

I’ve thought about rideshares that offer cool rides, and then I’ve thought of ones that have a fleet of total junkers. Hell, if you buy a $500 car and use it as a taxi you could probably make the money back. So it’s a service where you drive the car to pay off the car. That way there are more cool cars out there, because people can pick and go “oh, I want an old American station wagon.”

Hell, a fleet of classic wagons would be fantastic. They’re cool to look at, and they’ve got room for 8.
